REGGIE PONDER Staff Writer The towns ofHertford and Winfall will elect may ors and town council mem bers in municipal elections that will be held Tuesday. Today is the last day of early voting for the elec tion. Voting will take place at the Perquimans County Board of Elections at 601 S. Edenton Road St., Hert ford, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. As of noon on Oct. 31, 167 voters had cast early votes in either the Hertford or Winfall election. On Election Day, polls open at 6:30 a.m. and will close at 7:30 p.m. Election Day poll ing places in Hertford are the Perquimans County Library at 514 S. Church Street for East Hertford, and the auditorium of the N.C. Cooperative Exten sion Center at 601 S. Edenton Road Street for West Hertford. In Winfall, voters in Parkville precinct will cast ballots at the Winfall Ruri- tan Community Building at 201 Catherine Street. In Hertford, two candi dates are vying for mayor: Ashley Hodges, an incum bent town councilor, and first-time candidate Regi nald White. Gracie Felton, Virginia Powell Harvey, Keith Rouse and Rhonda Waters are running for two seats on the Hertford Town Council. High School Athletic Associa tion 1A state playoffs on PCHS Theater to present ‘Little Women’ FROM STAFF REPORTS The Perquimans County High School Theater Department will bring “Lit tle Women” to the local stage Wednesday and Thursday of next week. “The play is based on Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel and brought to glorious life in this tale of the indomitable March girls of Concord, Mas sachusetts,” explained PCHS theater teacher Grace Jones. “In a time of great social upheaval, Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth grow Saturday, Oct. 28. Perquimans (26-3,12-0 Four Rivers) beat the visit ing Eno River Bobcats by a match score of25-16,25-11 and 25-13. More PIRATES | A6 Director: Hertford making progress in water-leak response REGGIE PONDER Staff Writer HERTFORD—The town of Hertford is mak ing slow but steady prog ress repairing leaks in the town’s water pipes, accord ing to the department head charged with that task. David Forsythe, pub lic services director for the town, made a report to the Hertford Town Coun cil Monday, Oct. 23, on the progress the town is mak ing fixing the leaks. Forsythe said town staff has been running into examples of corrosion in galvanized pipes, which is one of the underlying problems in the water sys tem. The town is prioritiz ing the water leaks in the system based on factors such as the volume ofwater involved and number of customers affected, he said. Right now leaks in the vicinity of King Street are the top priority, Forsythe said. Work on the King Street repairs should take place within two weeks, he said. There is work on a sec tion of Grubb Street that was expected to start this week, according to For sythe. The town also has iden tified a valve leak next to the Perquimans County Department of Social Ser vices building, and work on fixing that was expected to take place on Oct. 25. There are three leaks on Dobbs Street that are slated to be repaired next week. More LEAKS | Afi American Legion Post 126 plans Veterans Day celebration FROM STAFF REPORTS American Legion Post 126’s Veterans Day celebration will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, outside the Perquimans County Courthouse in downtown Hertford. At 11 a.m., the ceremony will start with the color guard marching down Church Street to post colors on the courthouse lawn. The Perquimans County High School marching band will per form the national anthem and vet erans will post service flags in a traditional salute to the nation’s armed forces.The veterans will be escorted by members of a local Girl Scouts Troop. A member of Post 126 will pro vide the keynote address. The post will begin drawing tickets for its Veterans Day raf fle starting at 1 p.m. with a ticket drawn every two minutes up till 2:22 p.m. During the raffle, Post 126 will host an open house and serve food and drinks to local veterans. On Friday, Nov. 10, Post mem bers will visit veterans at the Hert ford Rehabilitation Center to retire and replace the center’s national flag.
